STEP ZERO: Energy Audit
Obtain or perform an Energy Audit or HERS rating. The reason this is considered “Step Zero” is because an audit or rating is nothing more than a diagnosis that identifies the problems that need to be fixed. The real work doesn’t start until the next step.
STEP 1: Energy Efficiency Improvements
Fix the building shell by sealing air leaks and adding insulation. Also, this is the time to address any safety issues such as mechanical ventilation, fixing gas leaks, or addressing mold or mildew problems. EDGE Energy Home Performance Contracting Services include:

STEP 2: Green Building
This phase consists of higher-dollar home renovations. While these improvements will add value to your home and save energy, they are generally towards the bottom of most cost-effective lists:
- Upgrade mechanical systems
- Install high efficiency furnaces or water heaters
- Replacing windows, super-insulating, or green remodeling
