Ventilation Systems

A healthy home needs enough fresh air to fill the house 8 times each day. Sealing and insulating your home saves energy by keeping your warmed or cooled air in where it is needed, but a sealed house without proper ventilation would be unhealthy.Home Ventilation strategies

“Build tight, ventilate right”

Properly ventilating your home is a vital part of any energy improvement plan. Ventilation will improve air quality by removing allergens, pollutants and moisture, but a well planned ventilation system will do that while conserving energy. EDGE Energy offers the following ventilation systems and home humidity improvements:

Whole House, Balanced Ventilation Systems: Air exchangers bring air into the home (into the duct return) while simultaneously blowing air out . The two most common systems are:

  • Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) – These systems transfer heat from exhaust air to incoming air during the heating season, and vice versa during the cooling season.
  • Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) – These systems transfer heat AND moisture from exhaust air to incoming air in winter, and vice versa in summer. This provides greater comfort by adding moisture to incoming air during the drier winter season, and removing moisture during the humid summer season.

Spot Ventilation: Exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens are essential for removing excessive moisture from the home and preventing mold and mildew. New Energy Star-rated exhaust fans are now available.

Miscellaneous Ventilation: Radon ventilation in basements funnel radon gas out of the house preventing dangerous buildups. Fans in crawlspaces ventilate those areas to help keep them dry and prevent mold and mildew.

Home Humidity Improvements: We can install humidifiers on existing HVAC systems or include them with new systems. Edge Energy can also recommend stand-alone humidifiers.

Ventilation is an important part of a healthy home and humidity can increase comfort in dry, winter months. Our energy audit will determine, among other things, how much fresh air enters your home. Using this information and taking into account your home energy efficiency needs, we can recommend the ventilation system that will work best for you.
