Energy Efficient Homes
ByImproving energy efficiency requires a “whole house” approach. It’s not enough to focus on one or two processes. At EDGE Energy, we evaluate your house as a system. That’s why we participate in a locally sponsored Home Performance program with Energy Star. To learn more about the Energy Starprogram and our whole-house approach to an energy efficient home, read on or contact us with any questions you may have.
About the ENERGY STAR Home Performance Program
The Energy Star program was created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.
S. Department of Energy (DOE) in 1992. Energy Star provides national standards for a comprehensive approach to creating energy efficient homes. The program ensures that every aspect of your home is taken into consideration when upgrading your home with an ENERGY STAR partner. It focuses on saving energy and improving home comfort while also helping to protect the environment.
Our Whole-House Approach to Energy Efficient Homes: Three Distinct Phases
We have incorporated Energy Star standards into a unique process that helps you cost-effectively and comprehensively create an energy efficient home. Based on the information from your energy audit, we identify the most effective plan to upgrade your energy systems, focusing on the most critical and cost-effective improvements first. We do this by strategically organizing our recommendations into three well-defined phases:
#1. We begin with lower-cost home improvements focused on areas of your home that are losing the most energy or have safety issues, including:
The building shell (air sealing and house insulation)- Mold or mildew
- General air sealing (insulation in attics and basements, crawlspace insulation, etc.)
- Home foam insulation (spray foam insulation)
- HVAC duct sealing
- Combustion safety and home air quality
- Drywall and green painting
#2. Next, we suggest the higher-dollar home renovations that will add value to your home and reduce energy usage, including:
- Upgrading mechanical ventilation systems
- Setting up high-efficiency furnaces or home water heaters
- Installing replacement doors or replacement windows
- Super-insulating areas of your home
- Green remodeling
#3. Finally, we evaluate your options for home backup power solutions and home renewable energy systems. These options can take you beyond energy efficiency and into energy self-sufficiency. You will be able to create part or all of your home energy needs and sell excess electricity back to the power gird. These suggestions may include:
Battery banks- On-site generators for homes
- Geothermal residential systems
- Solar water heating systems
- Home wind turbines
- Residential solar power systems
No matter where you are in the process of creating an energy efficient home, we can help. Contact us for information about a specific home improvement you may be thinking of or for a whole house evaluation.
