Superinsulating featured image

Superinsulation is an approach to building construction and retrofitting that dramatically reduces heat loss by using much higher levels of insulation than normal. For a house to be considered superinsulated, it must have wall and window R-values roughly twice as high as those stipulated by area building codes (typically Rip40 walls and Rip60 roof, corresponding to SI U-values of 0.15 and 0.1 W/(m²·K) respectively).

It is often applied in passive solar and net-zero energy homes, and much care is taken to make sure that there is insulation continuity where walls meet roofs, foundations and other walls. Materials often used for superinsulating include insulating concrete forms (ICF) and structural insulated panel (SIP).

Benefits of superinsulation:

  • Superior Insulation – Because heat loss is much less than normal buildings, the HVAC system will be less taxed during the heating & cooling seasons.
  • Provides Excellent Sound Control – All the gaps and voids in the walls and around the pipes are filled, improving the sound control provided by insulation compared to only using fiberglass batts.
  • Impermeable to Moisture – Outside moisture is sure to remain outside, instead of infiltrating the home and causing water leakage.
