Superinsulation is an approach to building construction and retrofitting that dramatically reduces heat loss by using much higher levels of insulation than normal. For a house to be considered superinsulated, it must have wall and window R-values roughly twice as high as those stipulated by area building codes (typically Rip40 walls and Rip60 roof, corresponding to SI U-values of 0.15 and 0.1 W/(m²·K) respectively).
It is often applied in passive solar and net-zero energy homes, and much care is taken to make sure that there is insulation continuity where walls meet roofs, foundations and other walls. Materials often used for superinsulating include insulating concrete forms (ICF) and structural insulated panel (SIP).
